Discrimination is when people treat others badly because they are different from them. Oppression refers to discrimination on a larger or systemic level. This is often used to take power away from an individual or a group of people. Racism is a type of discrimination against another person’s race, skin colour or ethnicity.

The important thing to remember about the different types of discrimination is that they are all unfair, hurtful, and often connected. If you are against one type of discrimination, then it makes sense to be against them all!

All students have the right to go to school in an environment where they feel safe. If you feel like you are being harassed, bullied, or made to feel unsafe at school talk to a teacher about what is happening. If you see or hear someone who is being racist to another student or using racist terms please report it immediately. The staff and students have a responsibility to try to make the school a safe place. St Mary’s Catholic School will NOT tolerate racism. if you see it, hear it, or witness it REPORT IT!
